This weekend saw the Formula Ford Eurocup head to the fast Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. This circuit is home to the Belgium Formula One Grand Prix and is one of the most challenging, picturesque and historic race tracks in the world.
Qualifying was looking good for Australian Geoff Uhrhane in the Premier Powered JTR Mygale, when the dominant Scott Malvern suffered gearbox problems early in the session. Geoff was top of the leader board early on until Malvern’s’ team mate Jeroen Slaghekke secured pole for all three races.
Race 1: a fantastic race with cars taking advantage of the slipstreaming opportunities this circuit offers, with positions changing at every corner. With cars fighting at the front, this slowed up the leader allowing Malvern to work his way up from the back of the grid. Malvern drove a brilliant race to take the race win whilst Uhrhane took second and a new lap record. Matt Parry in the Premier Powered Fluid Motorsport Developments Van Diemen, also drove well to finish up sixth.
Race 2: a minor incident at turn one allowed Uhrhane to get a brake and get away. The pack behind were in a furious battle while again Malvern worked his way up from the back. Once into second Malvern looked to have secured second until Uhrhane made a mistake into the final chicane allowing Malvern the chance to catch right up. The pair changed positions a couple of times on the last lap with Uhrhane holding a defensive line into the final chicane. Malvern took a wide line into the first part of the chicane to try to get an advantage into the final turn. The pair interlocked wheels but made it out onto the final straight. With the pair’s wheels millimetres away from each other, the two clashed before the line, Uhrhane’s car flying over the front of Malvern’s to take the win by 0.05 of a second. Tristan Mingay drove a strong race in the Premier Powered JTR Mygale to finish fourth and Bas Schouten finished a creditable fifth in the Premier Powered Provily Racing Mygale.
Race 3: another frantic scrap with the lead swapping at every corner. Malvern again made his way up to the leading pack. Uhrhane out braked himself and ran into the back of Slaghekke’s car at the final chicane. Malvern took the win and the new lap record.
